Defeat Predicted For Education Bill
RALEIGH AP A governor's spokesman expects the House to defeat a Senate approved measure to make the lieutenant governor permanent chairman of the State Board of Education. The Senate backed the bill 31 18 with Lt Gov Jim Green presiding, sending it to a House committee that has bottled up the measure since April. Opposition grew over the weekend as education leaders argued the move would weaken the governor's control of school policy. The board will elect its chairman early next month with Dr David Bruton of Southern Pines among candidates.
