Raleigh Grants 30 Day Reprieve For Gas Chamber Death
Governor Hodges suspended the planned May execution of Robert Conner of Winston-Salem for the Langston Roberts robbery murder in May 1954. The reprieve delays the death sentence at least until July 15 while the file is reviewed. Conner had been twice convicted in Forsyth Superior Court and by the State Supreme Court for a $44 holdup robbery and murder. Roberts, a Winston-Salem grocer, was shot and died en route to a hospital. Conner’s listed address was Amityville, allegedly Forsyth County native.
