Safe defense costs a trick in bridge hand analysis
Oswald Jacoby explains that breaking holding in a suit can cost a trick and recommends an aggressive defense when many suits are split. In the sample, West avoids dangerous leads and keeps trump safety, but declarer still loses a trick via a spade lead and fails on multiple finesses. If West had opened a heart or diamond, declarer could have been sacrificed into a game and rubber.
