Truman Seeks 8.5 Billion for Foreign Arms Aid

Rail workers strike after protracted talks with power company

About 625 workers in North and South Carolina comprising the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen walk out after negotiations fail to secure a 10 per cent pay rise. The company offered five to six cents hourly, which would lift wages to 1.35 dollars. A midnight mediation in Charlotte, led by Mayor Victor Shaw, extended with brief coffee breaks but ended with no settlement. Spartanburg Mayor Whitesides reported no progress and said the strike would continue. The conference resumed with Ebenezer Whitesides noting the session stayed civil, but no agreement was reached.
