President Roosevelt asked Congress for a flexible labor bill to set minimum wages maximum hours and ban child labor and exploitation of unorganized workers. A draft bill outlines a 40 cent wage floor and rules to bar products from certain unfair labor practices.
Cincinnati May 24 The American Federation of Labor approves a summer campaign against John L Lewis and the Communist aligned CIO Heavily loyal unions would be asked to contribute an extra cent per member monthly to end Lewis influence The plan targets CIO locals and expels them from central bodies with aims to extend AFL reach into coal textile and garment sectors.
Wallis Warfield and the Duke of Windsor practiced their marriage in Monts France and abandoned a honeymoon cruise plan. The mayor of Monts conducted rehearsals for the wedding set June 3. Officials noted restrictions on guests and attire for the ceremony. Meanwhile US politics saw the Supreme Court sustain federal unemployment insurance and old age pension provisions in landmark rulings.
New York May 24 Manuel Quezon president of the Philippine commonwealth arrived from London amused by a ruling from High Commissioner Paul McNutt on which officials are honored at formal dinners. He joked a diplomatic crisis would not arise and noted he might rank fourth under the precedence plan if adopted. Wayne McCoy confirmed foreign consul notification of the order.
Prof. Auguste Piccard and associate Max Cosyns plan a stratosphere flight. The inflatable balcone is prepared at Zellick near Brussels for a take-off when weather permits.
Sigmund Levaneffsky, American trained Soviet pilot, tuned up a Douglas transport for a dash across the North Pole to the United States. Stalin designated him to inaugurate the pole base and the Moscow to San Francisco air route via the pole. Soviet officials hope the flight sets a non stop distance record and paves regular Moscow to US air travel, aided by a meteorological observatory at the pole. Three supply planes remained at Rudolf Island, 560 miles away.
Miss Katherine Lenroot chief of the Labor Department Childrens Bureau told a House subcommittee that employment of girls ages 16 and 17 in textiles could rise if not regulated. She cited a survey of 25 mills across eight states showing girls outnumbered boys and often worked through breaks with no pauses. The median wage for these girls was about 10 dollars a week with hourly rates around 30 cents.
Governor Bibb Graves of Alabama, chairing a southern freight rate conference, prepared to seek a downward revision of Southern Railway rates before the Interstate Commerce Commission. He met with Governor Olin D. Johnston of South Carolina and ICC officials to urge uniform treatment of all states in rate determinations.
JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER SR died at his winter home The Casements in Ormond Beach Florida. He aged 97 a life long financier who built a fortune estimated at as high as 2.4 billion though his estate was described as relatively small and liquid. Rockefeller was 97 and would have turned 98 in July.
Spanish insurgents press toward Lemona near Bilbao's ring of defense after a swift southeast thrust. Three villages, Yurre Dima and others, are reported captured as government lines risk collapse. In England, 4000 Basque refugee children flee from Bilbao to a camp near Southampton as RAF planes pass overhead.
A coroner's inquest is scheduled for Thursday night in Gaston county into the death of Rupert Clemmer 63 found dead at Will Mooney's home near Cherryville. Police reported bruises and burns on his left arm and right leg suggesting possible foul play.
New York May 24 National Container Corp awards a 3.5 million dollar contract for a Kraft Paper Pulp and Board Mill at Jacksonville Florida to Merritt Chapman and Scott Corp. Gwin A Whitney says construction starts immediately with completion planned for early next year. This marks the fifth mill project by the firm in the southern paper and pulp sector including works for Union Bag and Paper at Savannah and for Container Corp of America at Fernandina.
Guilford College marked 100 years of continuous education with a centennial convocation. Prominent educators and North Carolina leaders joined Dr. Arthur Morgan to address the graduating class. Governor Clyde Hoey and others sent greetings as 65 graduates received degrees amid ceremonies at the Guilford campus.
In Gastonia investigators will hold an informal hearing into the death of John Groves a 49 year old local shoe repairer who died Saturday from a broken neck suffered in a Friday night collision. The hearing before Coroner C C Wallace is set for May 29.
The general assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States voted to meet next year at Meridian Mississippi on May 19. The invitation was extended by Ray A. A. Little, pastor of First Presbyterian church at Meridian, and seconded by Dr Frank Price, retiring moderator.
In Montreat on May 24 the general assembly of the United States Presbyterian Church resumed review of the social and moral welfare committee report. Delegates from 88 presbyteries across 16 southern states discussed race relations, war threat, liquor, obscene literature, and social diseases as they continued the controversial study.

Col and Mrs Lindbergh reportedly welcomed their fourth child on Coronation Day. The infant was born April 9 at their English home Longborn Boaks Kent after a three week European and East tour. Col Lindbergh did not attend Westminster Abbey for the coronation.
NEW YORK May 24 prices on the stock market softened with a trickle of liquidation. At the open shares rose slightly but later eased to modest net losses. Leading issues included Bethlehem Steel General Motors Chrysler U S Rubber American Telephone Western Union and General Electric among others.
In Bainbridge Georgia on May 24 officers found the second hacked body near a gin pond four miles south of town. Rita Mae Richards a 14 year old farm girl is identified as the second victim. The other slain woman is Ruby Hurst who lived on the same Colquitt farm as Richards.
