Washington May 24 4 The United States Great Britain and Japan are said to be in preliminary talks on naval questions before next year’s Washington Naval Conference. Asheville May 24 An effort under way to locate William Dudley Pelley generalissimo of the Silver Shirts movement indicted on charges of violating the state blue sky law. Pelley and two associates were arrested and bonded at 2500 dollars each for selling worthless stock of the Gallahad Press Inc to eleven persons.
In Asuncion on May 4 the defense ministry said heavy fighting continued in the Canada and strongest sectors of the Chaco. The ministry reported heavy casualties inflicted on the enemy across all sectors and noted ongoing combat conditions today.
Justice Daniel W. O'Donohue told the District of Columbia Supreme Court that government agencies cannot be compelled to buy Ford products, stating Ford is thwarting the national recovery act. The May ruling narrows options for federal procurement amid postwar policy debates.
North Carolina physicians are studying the physical condition of Luke Lea Jr who is serving a prison term in Raleigh for violation of banking laws. Former U S ambassador to Belgium Brand Whitlock died in Cannes France at noon aged 68 after bladder surgeries and a second operation. He had been ill for months and was recovering before heart failure ended his life. Funeral planned for Holy Trinity church and burial in Cannes with Belgian government representation possible.
