Asheville May 23. Tax anticipation notes issued as county deposits rose from 1.65 million to 3.20 million while bank reserves fell below legal minimum before the Central Bank & Trust Co. closed. Officials, including Newton M. Anderson and J. O. McElroy, face trial for conspiring to aid the bank amid fears of withdrawals causing a catastrophe.
Captain Frank M. Hawks, American speed flier, was awarded the honor medal by the International League of Aviators during its fifth annual celebration in Paris. Clifford B. Harmon presented the medal and predicted Hawks would receive the league trophy for 1930 in Washington.

He warned deficits risk balanced budgets and urged maintaining balance by year end. He expressed confidence in the nation’s future and Americans’ ability to overcome obstacles.

In Greenville South Carolina May 23 the Piedmont and Northern railroad was permanently restricted from extending its lines in North and South Carolina by a federal court injunction. The Interstate Commerce Commission and seven railroads sought the order, which Judge J Lyles Glenn granted. The case may go to the United States circuit court of appeals. The ICC asserted jurisdiction over proposed abandonment and construction for a carrier of sectional importance. Extensions denied included routes between Spartanburg and Gastonia and between Charlotte and Winston Salem.
Oxford England May 2 Prof Albert Einstein received the degree of Doctor of Science from Oxford University in praise of his development of the theory of relativity. The ceremony marked him as a brilliant ornament of our century.
Milwaukee attorney William Sullivan prominent counsel for the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light was shot in his Whitefish Bay home. Visitor William Reinke fired at a maid, then shot Sullivan and killed himself. The maid Louise Zimmerman was wounded critically.
May 23 report from New York describes a massive air exercise with 597 planes launched from Long Island fields. Jets navigated a 10 mile arc over Westchester and the Hudson, amid unsettled weather and a dramatic flight past Governors Island. One plane nose-dived into the East River. two aboard survived. The 500th anniversary of her death falls next Saturday.
The Eastern Air Transport liner brought Governor Theodore Roosevelt of Porto Rico to Richmond Virginia at 3 45 p m from Raleigh North Carolina and he proceeded to President Hoover s Rapidan camp for a weekend visit with the President.
Oklahoma City May 23. A bloodhound brought from the McAlester prison to track three bank robbery suspects was reported lost today long after the suspects were captured. The dog’s trail led toward Jack Oak country southeast of Luther where three other canine sleuths searched for their mate.
The town of Ludlow California, population 670, was reported ruined today by a fire driven by hot desert wind. Two railway stations and a roundhouse survived. Ludlow lacks a water system and water must be hauled in for all uses.
Washington reports US manufactured airplanes totalled 672 in the first quarter, up 87 from the same period last year. The figure covers three months ending in March and reflects growth in the domestic aviation industry.
Dr. T. M. Rowlette of Concord was chosen president at the 28th annual meeting in Raleigh. The society named High Point as next year’s meeting site. Other officers elected include Dr. Ella Hardin of Durham as vice president Dr. F. R. Heine of Greensboro as secretary treasurer and Dr. K. E. White of Charlotte as trustee.
In Elizabeth City on May 23 a bumper pea crop yields about 218 bushels from a single seed bag, well above the typical 100 bushels. A railway crew logged 83 hours without sleep to clear 50 car shipments, signaling strong demand for the crop.
The city probes the Hollywood slaying of Charles H. Crawford and his lieutenant Herbert Spencer with a search for a missing woman and a special prosecutor to grill the police chief. Joe Taylor and a deputy D A seek June Taylor in San Francisco while George Harris Clark remains under suspicion. A thousand people attend Crawford’s funeral at St Paul’s church and mourn his political and underworld ties.
John Newell Garfield, 9, grandson of former president James A. Garfield, died after a self-inflicted gunshot at his Mentor home. Sheriff Maloney called it a personal safety incident. relatives said ill health offered no clear motive. Garfield left a widow and five children. his father James R. Garfield, once Roosevelt's interior secretary, survives.
Raleigh May 23. North Carolina's legislature, after 137 days in session, nears adjournment next week but faces delays. The revenue bill report must pass senate on three separate days before enactment, with a 15 cent ad valorem levy likely approved next Wednesday.
At Annapolis fifty or more naval academy midshipmen will wed after graduation in June. Many plan military weddings in the academy chapel or in Annapolis churches shortly after graduation, despite a ban on marriage during their four years of drill and study.
