Scientists win top award for super slurper diaper absorbent
A Peoria based eight member Absorbent Polymer Research Group led by Dr. William N. Doane earns a premier Agriculture Department citation for a starch based chemical that absorbs up to 1400 times its weight in water. The compound can be added to materials to improve liquid absorption across diapers kitty litter animal bedding and numerous products. It could cut costs of absorbent materials in homes hospitals and other settings. General Mills currently produces it commercially on a limited basis with patent rights sought by other firms. The award ceremony is set for Tuesday with ten recipients including one group and nine individuals.

Firm to process seaweed for chemical production in NC
Aqua 10 Corp plans to start extracting chemicals from sargassum seaweed at a 1042 acre Newport River site in Beaufort. Initial processing expected in June with boats operated by the company and purchases from local harvesters at 30 to 40 dollars per ton amid questions on handling and environmental impact.
