The government says national troops recaptured Changchun at 11 a.m. after fighting communist remnants. A communique from Gen. Tu Li Ming’s headquarters states resistance ended quickly as advance elements of Gen. Cheng Tung Kuo’s first army entered Changchun at 7 a.m.

Atlantic City May 23 Daughters of the American Revolution delegates praised as Mrs E C Denny Vann of Leonia New Jersey withdrew a resolution to delete a white artists only clause from Constitution Hall rental contracts The move came after a proposal to study the contracts by a special committee was announced and Polly Wyckoff chapter of northern New Jersey led the withdrawal effort
The Navy showcased new firearms at the Dahlgren ordnance proving ground, including a 3-1 automatic loading anti-aircraft gun that fires once a second and will mount on ships with radar guidance. An experimental three inch 70-caliber AA gun was demonstrated only in discussion and not fired.

They extend OPA life to June 30 1947 set up gradual removal of controls end subsidy payments May 1 1947 with 1 1 billion dollars for payments to that date. Durham, May 23 The arrest of Albert Currel Hudspeth, 24, in connection with the Raleigh robbery and slaying of Callie Carroll on May 2 raises the total in custody to four others who will have hearings in Raleigh next week. Carroll, a producer, was beaten and robbed of 4000 dollars. Hudspeth showed a 4-F draft card with home address 324 West Avenue, Portsmouth, Virginia. Previously arrested were Claiborne McKee Charlie Clemmer Leo Tiller of Durham and Roy Odell Whitt of Winston Salem.
Washington May 23 former Secretary of War Stimson told the Pearl Harbor inquiry that President Roosevelt was undoubtably lying about ordering an attack on Japanese forces in South Asia. Stimson said the president would not have acted without Congress and never formally announced any such decision.
A government order curtailing non essential building cut state construction costs in April. Clarence Pritchard, statistics director for the state department of labor, notes total building expenditures in 95 cities fell from 11,319,000 in March to 4,409,000 in April. Non residential permits slid from 7,189,000 to 1,268,000 and residential permits from 4,129,000 to 3,140,000.
In Asheville Warren T. White special assistant to the Seaboard airline railway receivers told the southeastern power sales conference the south can prevent stagnation and will see unparalled advancement in science industry and economic progress. He predicted a balanced southern economy and higher prosperity in the coming decade as domestic needs and international relief drive commerce and industry forward. He added that future limits will be set by the south itself.
Senator Reed of Kansas declared labor unions are trying to control government in the interest of one organized class and urged action on pending labor disputes legislation. He spoke as Senator Hill said no reason why a measure could not clear the Senate.
Senator Hoey argues the Wagner Act unfairly exempts labor from duties others face. He says the act should apply antitrust and monopoly laws to labor equally and notes that closing mines could become conspiracies. He cites President Wilson on labor strikes harming the public interest.
