High Point launches a fundraising drive to raise $20,000 to equip larger YWCA quarters to serve more than three times as many girls. The city, with 2000 mill and factory workers plus hundreds in offices and stores, faces an emergency in housing and welfare for young women. Community support urged as campaign opens in June.
Indianapolis May 23 The American Legion announces a national essay contest on why America should prohibit immigration for five years. Open to schoolchildren from May 25 to October 12, prizes total 750 500 and 250 for first second and third. State and regional judging lead to Indianapolis region finals.
The motion picture owners of America in Chicago pass a resolution condemning producers and distributors led by Whefe as they escalate their fight with the American Society of Composers and Publishers over musical rights. Edith Ilopa returns home after a winter term at Angel Carolina College for Women.
Elsie Baker contralto and English cellist John Mundy with pianist Henry Tilden Davis presented a highly praised program. An enthusiastic audience demanded encores while favorites like Swing Low Sweet Chariot and Old Black Joe drew applause. Sydney Greenbie spoke on world peace, and Hughie Fitzpatrick offered comic vaudeville style capers.
At the regular council meeting Chief L W Blackwelder will lead a restructured High Point police department with J M Hoover promoted to desk sergeant and clerk of police court. Lieutenants A J Morris and D W Elliott and patrolmen W G Friddie H D Stout 7 P Myers L R French J M Rickert J O Wood are re-elected, with new patrolmen John Setts and James Fulton named. A six time motorcycle officer from Asheville will join around June 1, boosting the force to 12 officers plus the chief as the city plans a modern patrol system in the new administration building.
Wort Bragg May 22 Applications for attendance at the citizens military training camp to be held in August are coming in slowly, says Lieut Frederick Coyne Jr recreation officer. He toured High Point last summer promoting camps and noted North Carolina lags in acceptances, with 156 accepted. States vary as publicity continues.
