Postal Rate Increase Sent To President

The House passed a postal reform bill sending it to the White House. It raises first class from 3 to 4 cents and air mail rates, with overall increases about 550 million dollars annually. Wage raises for 520,000 postal workers total about 220 million dollars more than proposed. The Senate backed it 83 to 0. the president’s approval is anticipated.

Living Costs Hit New Peak in April

Washington officials reported the living cost index rose in April to 123.5 percent of the 1917 49 base, driven by higher food prices especially fresh fruits and vegetables. Some food prices were seen declining in May and the overall level expected to stabilize through summer. The rise affects about half a million workers via labor contracts, with June payroll increases of two to five cents an hour.

Former Dean Horack of Duke Law School Dies at 80

Former Duke Law School dean H. Claude Horack died at his Charlotte home aged 80. He retired from Duke in 1949 and is survived by his widow Elanor MacLauchlan, two sons Benjamin S. of Charlotte and Harold M. of New Orleans, and a daughter Mrs. Joe H. Dixon of Evanston. Funeral arrangements were incomplete.

Stokesdale Bank Robbery Suspect Captured in Woods

Emmuel Upshaw, 36, of Baltimore, was arrested near Stokesdale after the $18,426 Stokesdale Commercial Bank holdup. Nearly all loot recovered including $7,240 in a coffee pot. FBI identified Upshaw and he was taken to Greensboro for federal bank robbery charges after confessing.

President Orders Air Safety Study
