The House passed a postal reform bill sending it to the White House. It raises first class from 3 to 4 cents and air mail rates, with overall increases about 550 million dollars annually. Wage raises for 520,000 postal workers total about 220 million dollars more than proposed. The Senate backed it 83 to 0. the president’s approval is anticipated.
Washington officials reported the living cost index rose in April to 123.5 percent of the 1917 49 base, driven by higher food prices especially fresh fruits and vegetables. Some food prices were seen declining in May and the overall level expected to stabilize through summer. The rise affects about half a million workers via labor contracts, with June payroll increases of two to five cents an hour.
Gangs armed with clubs and bottles defy guardsmen in Panama City as students’ strike widens. Down town streets filled with violence, traffic signals battered, and private cars detoured. Three homemade bombs explode while crowds protest President de la Guardia Jr and demand firing of Guard leaders. The government warns of a siege if violence continues.
Paris reports fighting between French and Tunisian forces flared in Tunisia after French planes bombed the airport at Gafsa. Bourguiba says clashes were near Remada as Tunisian authorities demanded evacuation of the airfield. Paris seeks to stabilize Algeria amid tensions with Tunis and rightist forces.
Heavy fighting erupts between government forces and a splinter Moslem sect around Baalbeck, Lebanon's famed tourist site. An American, Mitchell Harris, was forced to flee Buffalo, New York, as wife Mrs Harris departed to Beirut. President Chamoun vows not to resign amid two weeks of violence.
Former Duke Law School dean H. Claude Horack died at his Charlotte home aged 80. He retired from Duke in 1949 and is survived by his widow Elanor MacLauchlan, two sons Benjamin S. of Charlotte and Harold M. of New Orleans, and a daughter Mrs. Joe H. Dixon of Evanston. Funeral arrangements were incomplete.
The Senate Finance Committee backed a House passed bill to allow the federal government to advance funds to states for a temporary extension of unemployment benefits. The committee vote was 11 to 4.
In Albion Nebraska a teen gunman, Kermit Keeshan, killed Jerry Sherwood and Diane Zaruba after a rivalry for a girl’s attention. Diane’s bravery and Mrs Svoboda’s interim defense are noted as Keeshan then shot himself. Lynn Sherwood, a former school board president, was to award his son’s diploma tonight.
Emmuel Upshaw, 36, of Baltimore, was arrested near Stokesdale after the $18,426 Stokesdale Commercial Bank holdup. Nearly all loot recovered including $7,240 in a coffee pot. FBI identified Upshaw and he was taken to Greensboro for federal bank robbery charges after confessing.
Norfolk witnesses credit Marvin C. Clark of Atlanta with pulling a boy away from a door swinging open on a Capital Airways flight over North Carolina. The plane crew secured the door while passengers followed safety orders. The mother of the boy and a second child left the airport with relatives.
President Eisenhower directed his air coordinating committee to conduct a special study to reduce midair collisions after a Maryland Air National Guard jet collided with a commercial airliner, killing about a dozen people. He plans talks with Rep. Prince Preston and Rep. Cliff Clevenger, top members of the House Appropriations subcommittee, who had urged action.
Houston hosts a clash as Texas segregationists accuse Southern Baptists of promoting race mixing while distributing anti integration literature at the 15,000 delegate annual convention. Delegates read material during sessions. discussion calls for closer interracial fellowship and reelection of Rep. Brooks Hays, with Hays seen as conciliatory on race relations.
Secretary of State Thad Eure turned over to the attorney general a list of 21 candidates in the May 31 primary who failed to file preliminary campaign spending reports by the deadline. Several late filers reported varying contributions and expenses, including Rep. Ralph J. Scott and opponents Winfield Blackwell, with totals of 2000 and 2110 in contributions respectively, and Arch N. Wallace and others in the 12th District race.
