Allied report says U S bombers and fighters destroyed 96 enemy planes as invasion approaches to Italy. The tally extends the Allied air victory streak to 285 in the campaign against Axis air power in Italy, Sicily and Sardinia.

Floods threaten Indiana Arkansas Kansas and Oklahoma with thousands homeless and millions in damage as 14 dead in Indiana 3 in Missouri 2 in Oklahoma and 1 in Illinois are confirmed.

Mussolini faced skies and coastline, awaiting payback, as Hitler sent warm wishes and Italy reaffirmed solidarity. Virginio Gayda highlighted Italy's African and Mediterranean aid to Germany's war effort.
