Presbyterians Meet Tonight in Southern Assembly
MONTREAT May 22 The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States opens tonight at Anderson Auditorium rebuilt after the 1940 fire. The Rev Frank C Brown of Dallas will preach the opening sermon and conduct the election and induction of the new moderator. The six day program includes a study of the southern church and reports such as the ministers annuity fund showing about 80 ministers retired at 50 a month. Wives of 10 deceased ministers receive half the pensions. An overture from Mecklenburg Presbytery seeks a fast finding committee to test seminary orthodoxies amid criticism of a pamphlet by layman Thomas M Glasgow of Charlotte regarding Union Theological Seminary teaching.

Hell On Wheels Armored Division To Maneuver at Fort Benning
Fort Benning Ga May 22 The second armored division of the U S Army will deploy for full combat maneuvers starting June 16 for the Battle of Tennessee the first large demonstration of this new mechanized force. It will then join army maneuvers in Sabine River region Louisiana and Texas in August and September before moving to North Carolina in November for additional mock blitz warfare. The fully mechanized unit includes tank regiments two field artillery organizations an infantry regiment a reconnaissance battalion engineers ordnance quartermaster medical battalion and a signal company with attached observation aviation to support combat operations.
