Cerbere French border town reports machine gun attack by insurgent planes from Portbou area. Bullets injure a boy and scatter across streets as authorities launch an inquiry amid Franco-Spanish border clashes.
In Pittsburgh on May 22 the steel workers organizing committee pressed its post election push for collective bargaining across 200000 more workers. Key firms including Crucible, Jones & Laughlin, Inland, Republic Steel, Youngstown Sheet and Tube, and Bethlehem faced featured bargaining threats as the union targets major independent mills.
In Durham on May 22 the defense prepared to present its case in the murder trial of Charlie Brown a Durham barber charged with killing his wife Lena Fish Brown. State witnesses testified including Sheriff Belvin who arrested Brown after his wife's body was found in a creek on December 31. Duke toxicologist Dr Haywood Taylor reported human blood on ten objects at Browns home and pathologist Lloyd Wilbur said the death resulted from fractures to the skull and brain injuries from blows. The court noted the case may not reach the jury before Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.
Dr. Hugo Eckner, veteran airship master, calls the Hindenburg disaster extremely mysterious and attributes the flames to a static electricity spark igniting free hydrogen. He suggests a sudden aft gas leak allowed gas to accumulate then escape and ignite.
In Jersey City on May 32, Gladys MacKnight, 17, testified that her former sweetheart Donald Wightman, 18, killed her mother Helen MacKnight with a hatchet. She described grappling for a knife when her mother shouted and fell, saying Wightman stood with the hatchet afterward and claimed he thought she was trying to kill Gladys.
Phillip A. Baumgartner a 37 year old civilian clerk at the Fort Oglethorpe CCC subsistence warehouse is on a hunger strike to protest pay. He has not eaten since last Sunday and has shaved his beard in a bid for higher wages. He says he cannot quit his job and will continue as long as possible.
The UNC faculty cooperative in Chapel Hill, led by Professors Lear Meteer and Breckenridge, received a state charter authorizing bulk wholesale purchases. The group, which has operated about a year without a charter, faced protests from the State Merchants association over faculty business ties. President Frank P. Graham said the university does not sponsor the coop and an investigation will be conducted.
Washington May 22 Economy advocates defeated in the house planned to renew their battle in the senate over Roosevelt relief. The house approved 210 to 128 the administration 1.5 billion work relief request for the year starting July while rejecting cuts to 1 0 ". The Senate committee will hear the measure with Hopkins as first witness as leaders forecast continued battle over relief spending.
The Commerce Department ruled that a proonged left hand spin likely caused the Winston-Salem air crash on April 6 that killed Pilot John H. Harman during spinning test flights to study acrobatic maneuver restrictions. Investigators said the flight began around 10 a.m. and climbed to 6 000 to 8 000 feet before a series of spins ended with a 12 turn right spin and loss of control.
In Warsaw on May 22 Semitic deputies and organizations called on Jewish merchants to shut their shops for two hours on May 24 to protest Bra ase anti-Semitic disorders.
The general assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States met at Montreat on May 22 with an ad interim committee led by Dr. H H Sweets proposing changes in the confession of faith. The docket included foreign relations social welfare and seminary curricula. A plan to allow churches to call pastors for definite terms by congregational vote was presented by Dr D T Caldwell and debated after Dr D Clay Lilly of Reynolda offered a substitute.
Dr Carl EB Rankin of Guilford County succeeds Dr BE McK Goodwin as superintendent of the North Carolina School for the Deaf. Dr Goodwin, head since 1894, resigns and becomes superintendent emeritus at age 78. His retirement was announced at graduation as Dr Howard Rondthaler of Salem College praised him.
At Fort Washington Maryland on May 22 a fire of undetermined origin swept the super structure of the Army Transport General Rucker tied to a dock. Damage was unofficially estimated up to 50000 dollars. The blaze started in the officers dining room and was controlled after 45 minutes by troops summoned by a general post alarm. Captain Paul Gau and eight crew members fled to safety when awakened by a wharf guard.
Albuquerque police pursued leads from Santa Fe as they search for Martha Pifer a 40 year old nurse who vanished May 14. Officers consider amnesia a possible cause while tracking reports of a woman resembling her seen in Santa Fe and note her recent transfer from Strasburg Virginia to the U S Indian Sanatorium.
The 18-year-old Ohio State University art student was found shot in her bathroom near campus. Officials opened an autopsy after family opposition to suicide findings, with a revolver nearby and questions about whether she died by her own action or foul play.
Monts France May 22 The Wallis Warfield wedding will feature a Welsh gold ring for Mrs Warfield echoing royal custom. The Duke will place the ring on her third finger at the civil ceremony June 3. Guests include Aunt Bessie and friends of the couple as the Chateau de Cambe hosts preparations and activities ahead of Windsor and Warfield nuptials.
About 4657 striking coal workers entombed themselves 60 feet underground at Superior Coal No. 4 mine in Wilsonville for a second night in a sit down protest. They reject evacuation demands from national union officers and press for work sharing. Negotiations with company officials continue as Pfahler indicates willingness to meet with a committee.
The Osservatore Romano reports German Catholic printing plants seized by the Gestapo. Eighteen plants that published Pope Pius Easter Encyclical against Nazi rule were closed and confiscated in retaliation, per Vatican sources.
An eleven man Soviet expedition landed by airplane on an ice floe near the pole to establish a permanent base as a prelude to the Moscow to San Francisco air route. Led by Dr Otto Schmidt the team from Rudolf Island reached the site after a six hour flight in a heavy four engine aircraft.
Atlanta police issued a plea with officers in five states to help locate Mary Saunders 17 an orphan governess who disappeared after meeting her employer Mrs M F Stewart at a bus station. Saunders 5 feet 4 inches tall 124 pounds has blonde hair and was last seen in a navy blue dress with a gray hat. She arrived from Liberty DC about two months ago.
The stock market rose with steels copper and motors driving gains from fractions to about two points. An opening upturn gave way to a stronger advance before closing minutes saw some issues slip. Brokers expect limited near term impact from wage and hour legislation on industry.
In California, army air force leaders say the United States could not defend two fronts in a war. Major General Francis Andrews notes shortages of fliers and equipment, skeletonized force groups, and lack of inland bases, while praising several exercises as highly informative for a confidential report.

LUMBERTON May 22 A jury ruled the death of 26 year old W Bur Cox of Rockingham justifiable homicide. The shooting happened last night when Cox advanced with a drawn knife at Joh Meares a middle aged textile worker who refused to help move a man described as drunk from a railroad track Watt Wilson testified Cox threatened Meares prompting the fatal confrontation on the railroad spur
Washington May 22 William Green AFL president linked communists with his opponents in the labor movement during a radio address. He cited a Moscow newspaper dispatch claiming the Communist Party in the United States is active in organizing workers in various industries. Green argued this shows the real cause of the rift within the union ranks and condemned the split.
