Four armed men abducted Jesse N. Wood from his home and forced him to help steal between 85 000 and 90 000 dollars from First National Bank of Jacksonville. Bank employees were tied and confined as the vault was opened, then the loot was loaded into a repossessed car. No injuries reported amid a statewide search and highway patrol roadblocks.
The Associated Press reports record spring floods across four Southwestern states with five deaths including four Kingsville Texas schoolboys struck by lightning. A Colorado woman drowned as mass evacuations began in two southeast Colorado cities amid rising waters. Homes and businesses were abandoned across Colorado Oklahoma Texas and northeast New Mexico. She pleaded guilty and cried as Judge Q K Nimocks handed down the sentence. The case featured pathologists testimony that rat poison caused the death and that Cockrell admitted poisoning her husband twice.
The IRS plans to consolidate 19 branch offices in North Carolina with others to improve service and convenience. No staff reductions are planned. savings come from rent. Sen. Ervin and other NC lawmakers opposed the closures, accusing the administration of using the state as a testing ground for consolidations.
