At Mather Pa the May 19 explosion trapped between 159 and 290 miners. Twenty bodies were recovered in the main entry as rescuers fought gas and cave-ins. Five others, four gas victims, were rushed to Waynesburg hospital.
Chattanooga May 19. Southern Baptist convention with about 3.7 million members vows to reject unnamed liquor interests backed candidates for president. The go to report mentions the New York governor as a referred candidate, but no names are adopted. Memphis was chosen for the 1929 convention with a 7 30 p m schedule.
In Washington a long Senate session ended 11:50 p m with the tax reduction bill vote delayed until next week after a Sabbath recess. Lawmakers rejected amendments on inheritance tax and tariff riders and blocked time limits on debate while Johnson of California and Reed of Missouri led a sharp clash.

Turlington request for a North Carolina presidential primary 79 to 30 A substitute proposal declared no primary to be called and argued harmony over party unity The debate referenced opposition from Walter P. Murphy and Josephus Daniels and cited potential bitterness within the party if expression was limited
In Pittsboro W Herbert Lawrence, on trial for the murder of Durham dressmaker Annie Terry, attempted self harm with a safety razor. He survived. doctors say his condition is not serious and he will be able to attend a Monday trial. Separate dispatches from Portland and Washington cover Oregon primary votes for Smith and Reed and Republican and Democratic delegate tallies for the national conventions.
May 19 Pittsburgh bureau of mines rescue teams rushed from Pittsburgh to Mather Greene county after a coal mine explosion. Officials said miners were entombed and fire raged. veteran miner Tom Callaghan reported 15 men trapped about 300 feet back in the shaft.
Four wounded in a garage shootout near Atlanta courthouse as deputies attempted to serve papers on Tome C. Gordon. Gordon and Deputy W. C. Morris were believed dying at a hospital. Henry Powe and a woman, Mrs. A. C. Steinhat, injured. Gordon opened fire after being asked to surrender, prompting return fire from Deputy Martin.
In Peking on May 19 prominent but inactive party leaders reportedly sought a national coalition with Chiang Kai-Shek to avert chaos should the northern regime fall. Northern generals warned they would not abandon Peking, and Manchurian commanders told the Japanese minister victory over invaders was possible, urging no retreat to Mukden. Japanese refugees crowded Tientsin as more flee toward Kalgan and Darien.
Four men robbed the dining car steward aboard the Michigan Central Western Express as it entered Chicago yards. The hold up occurred on train No. 23 traveling from New York to Chicago. $160 was taken after the quartet boarded at Forty Third street and jumped off near Forty First street.
In dense fog six liners and an excursion vessel grounded with no loss of life. The Mohawk docked for rescue while the Veendam Pennland and Jefferson suffered hull damage but pumps kept ahead of water. The Wheeler Smithfield grounded near Swinburne Island but awaited high tide to refloat.
Horace B. Choken Jr. of Palm Beach and New York and Jack Demott, local flier, were killed when their plane nosedived at 5:40 p.m. 60 feet northeast of the city stockade on Belvedere road. Warden L A Conner witnessed the crash and found them dead at the scene.
Major C. A. Lutz, Marine flier, won the Curtiss Marine trophy race on a 100 mile Potomac course at 157.46 mph. Lt Commander A. C. Miles, Navy, flying a Curtiss Hawk, placed second at 154.07 mph with Captain G. O. Major of the Marines third at 151.81 mph.
Kansas City May 19 The Rev George A Cooke of Wilmington Del files charges of heresy against Bishop R Francis J McConnell of Pittsburgh and Bishop William F McDowell of Washington senior bishop. He cites Religious Certainty statements as infidelity while conference officials dismiss previous charges as unfounded.
President Coolidge delivered the keynote at Phillips Academy in Andover to mark its 150th anniversary. He praised secondary schools for shaping patriotic citizens and lauded the academy as one of the nation’s leading schools. A record crowd of 10,000 residents, 650 students and faculty, 1,500 alumni, and thousands of visitors welcomed the president and Mrs. Coolidge during the four hour visit before their return to Northampton.
Berlin May 19 The article predicts little chance of major party upsets in tomorrow's Reichstag election. With 31 tickets, the campaign centers on party lines and the proportional system. Voter disaffection and new eligible voters shape the results as 2,000,000 join the electorate, bringing totals to 408,000,000.
Jesse H. Jones and Mayor Oscar F. Holcombe assured state delegation chairmen that Houston can host all expected attendees. A telegram stated that delegates would be properly housed fed and entertained, countering reports of limited access.
In Chicago on May 19 authorities and the Pyrek family ended a five day search for Johnny Pyrek. Despite police divers moving 10 000 tons of sand and hundreds of box cars involved, the river drag was halted and dynamite was ordered to surface the body. The boy’s playmate Bruno Dogdon had changed his story, but the week’s end ended hope of survival.
Washington reports Britain and its dominions and India are in accord with Kellogg’s war renunciation treaty and will cooperate fully. Sir Austen Chamberlain says Britain will cooperate and engage in negotiations. Germany and Italy have accepted the American proposal. Japan expected to respond soon with a favorable tenor.
Norfolk Virginia May 19 Creation of the office of general manager and designation of E C Bagwell who has been operating assistant to vice president in charge of operations M H Cahill to fill it was announced here this afternoon at the offices of President Leigh R Powell of the Seaboard Air Line railway Bagwell's office will be at Savannah He had been head of the operating department of the road since January 1 when Vice President Cahill whose retirement was announced yesterday has on leave of absence The general manager is a North Carolinian.
Hollis Grice, a 14 year old student from Istrouma High School, died after being struck in the heart by a baseball during a game between Istrouma high school and an independent nine in Baton Rouge. The incident occurred late today as the teams played at an area field. Officials are investigating the accident.
Senate continued in night session to act on the tax reduction bill. Three votes defeated attempts to repeal or cut the federal inheritance tax. Borah-led forces opposed modification. Bingham's repeal proposal failed 43 to 30. a 89 percent rate reduction failed 62 to 17. Reed sought to repeal an 80 percent credit on state inheritance taxes, a major hurdle to final bill disposition.
