Industrial Farm Colony for Women Prisoners Delayed
Raleigh May 20. The Industrial Farm Colony for women prisoners authorized by a 60 000 bond issue has not progressed since enactment in March. Governor McLean must appoint a five member board, two of whom must be women, with no site or maintenance funding yet designated. A tract must be state owned, healthful, with water and drainage, accessible by rail and road, near Samarcand training school for delinquent girls, and land for food production. The governor and council face site challenges and possible land limitations. The project aims for a separate, women-led operation, avoiding existing prison farms, but funding and land hurdles threaten timely start.
