Chanute Kansas with about 11 000 residents has not charged a city tax since 1930 and holds 350 000 to 400 000 dollars in its treasury. The city owns water gas and electricity utilities and funds government costs from earnings. Bonded debt was reduced to zero by 1931 and utilities funded a 90 000 municipal center a 375 000 building and other projects.
