The weather bureau urged evacuation of a fifteen to twenty mile wide strip along the west side of the Atchafalaya river from Port Barre to the Baton Rouge Lafayette railroad. The flood claimed unknown lives as 7,000 square miles submerged and more parishes flooded across south central Louisiana.
