Paris reports French raid north of hill 287 and north of hill 304 with heavy night artillery action.
Raleigh May 18 Miss Mary Graham assistant superintendent of Mecklenburg county schools and sister to F E Graham of the state university has accepted the presidency of Peace Institute Raleigh succeeding A Ramsey who recently resigned the announcement states
At a joint convention of the grand lodge of Odd Fellows and the Rebekahs in Wilson on May 18, state officers were elected and installed. Principal officers include Annie Baun of Poplar Bluff as president Lil liam Byrd of Asheville as vice president Mabel Garrison of Wilmington as warden Pattie Beck of Winston as secretary Hettie Witakers of Henderson as treasurer A fund to establish a steam laundry at the Fioldsboro orphanage was approved and work will begin immediately.
Henderson May 18 The Episcopal diocese convention today selected Wilson as the meeting site for the 100th annual session. The morning covered a proposal to establish a negro missionary diocese to be presented at the general conference in St Louis and routine business. Delegates to the general convention and convention reports were due to be decided before adjournment.

The House Naval Committee abandons Secretary Daniels five year building program and recommends budget for 1917 including five battleship cruisers at about $20.43 million each, four scout cruisers, one torpedo boat destroyer, two submarines, one hospital ship, one oil supply ship, and one ammunition supply ship. Committee vote 13 to 5 on battleship cruisers and submarines.
