Guilford Council No 23 Junior Order United American Mechanics marked its 62nd anniversary with a banquet at the Junior Order hall on Commerce Street. In Washington May 118, the district Supreme court continued the argument over the injunction brought by Riggs Bank against Secretary McAdoo Comptroller Williams and Treasurer Burke. The bank argues lack of jurisdiction warrants dismissal. Attorney F J Hogan represents the bank in opposition to the government.
Lisbon reports Premier Joao Chagas, shot on a train, showing improvement though losing sight in his right eye feared. Senator Freitas, who fired, was killed by a soldier. Costa's party had clashed with Chagas opponents last year, and Costa arrived in Lisbon. Earlier Madrid dispatchs claimed Chagas died.
New York May 18 Supreme Court Justice Henricks signed an order moving Harry K Thaw from the Tombs to Ludlow Street jail. The transfer follows a plea by Thaw's lawyers citing rheumatism and lack of exercise as delays in the ongoing jury trial testing Thaw's sanity set for Friday.
The Cunarder Orduna sailed from New York to Liverpool today with 225 passengers aboard. None of the passengers were Americans.
The Supreme Court today granted the motion to advance for argument the appeal of George M. Glenn from a Wake Superior Court ruling. The case concerns compelling Southern Express to accept one gallon of whisky at Richmond for shipment to Glenn in Raleigh and to deliver more than one quart to the same consignee within two weeks.
In Roxboro township Person county an election approved bonds for road work totaling 70000. The nine elected supervisors met and appointed A. M. Burns as chairman R. A. Burch secretary and B. Brooks as members. The highway commissioners plan to meet May 18 to plan bond sales and related business.
An official statement from Petrograd via London on May 18 says Austro German columns pursued the Russians who moved to a new position between the Pilica and Upper Vistula. It claims attacks toward the Stry and Dolina and along the Pruth were fruitless.
In London on May 15 the hearing for Anton Keupferle, once a Brooklyn resident and claimed U.S. citizen, began with a crowded court. Charged with spying, the German national is accused of feloniously attempting to convey information on British warships and military operations to aid Great Britain’s enemies. He pleaded not guilty.
The Peace Institute trustees met to outline plans to raise a $150,000 endowment fund. Rev. W. B. Lacey, recently elected Bible teacher, will canvass the state in the drive.
