Riots Turn Violent in Burlington Central NC

One teenager identified as Leon Mebane was killed by police during looting at a small grocery in Burlington along with two wounded as National Guardsmen clashed with up to 10 youths. The city faced daytime disturbances and fires at a grocery and two service stations. Guardsmen remained on duty with police after a school disturbance led to arrests of 14 pupils at Jordan Sellers High School amid protests over integration and cheerleaders.

Thieu Seeks Nixon Meeting for Unified Policy

North Carolina lawmakers eye June 14 adjournment

Raleigh AP legislative leaders plan to end the General Assembly by June 14 after hours of debate on the state budget and Gov. Bob Scott’s tax package including a five cent cigarette tax. House Speaker Earl Vaughn and Lt. Gov. Pat Taylor cite slow progress on interest rate changes and constitutional revisions as delaying adjournment. The session began in January with a target date of June 3, now unlikely.

Soviet twin Venus six mission reports data sendback

The Soviet Union announced that Venus 6 reached Venus 24 hours after Venus 5 and transmitted atmospheric measurements.
