Jarrett Wins Hickory 250 in Late Model Debut
Ned Jarrett of Camden North Carolina survived a lead slugfest with David Pearson to win the Hickory 250 late model race at Hickory Speedway before about 10 000 fans. Jarrett earned 1150 dollars and led Pearson by more than a lap as Pearson’s 1984 Dodge blew a tire on lap 285. Pearson earned 600 dollars for second, with Richard Petty third at 400. Lee Roy Yarbrough placed fourth and Buddy Baker fifth. The event featured a 10 lap caution period and a pole lap record set by James Johnson before engine trouble sidelined him after two laps.
