Adlay Grows as Potential Food Crop in Philippines
The Bureau of Agriculture reports adlay or coix lacryma jobi can be cultivated across elevations from sea level to 38 000 feet and yields 2000 to 3000 pounds per acre. When hulled it cooks like rice, cracked it makes breakfast cereal, and blends with wheat flour to bake biscuits. Flour imports rise as Filipinos shift toward wheat, indicating adlay could become a valuable grain crop with higher protein and fat content than rice or corn.
