Wax Coated Foods Lack Mandatory Labels Says Group

The Center for Science in the Public Interest charges the FDA has not enforced labeling rules or pushed safety testing for wax coatings on produce. They say up to 40 percent of apples 50 percent of tomatoes and 75 percent of cucumbers may be waxed, with other fruits and vegetables commonly treated. FDA officials acknowledge minimal retail level enforcement and say labeling is an economic issue. The group urged the FDA to require wax labeling spot checks and testing, especially for synthetic coatings.

Prostitutes' advocate forms group in Miami

Evelyn Young, a 27 year old social work student at a small Christian college, started Health and Happiness of Women to decriminalize prostitution and aid prostitutes. She recruits in jails, bars, streets and hotels, teaching health, rape awareness and vocational help to about 30 women, stressing that streetwalking is a short lived career.

Tornadoes kill three in Pembroke and injure seven in NC

Authorities described a funnel cloud carrying debris, while guardsmen were deployed to assist rescue efforts.

Morison Historian Samuel Eliot Morison Dies at 86

Samuel Eliot Morison, renowned historian of Massachusetts and the Navy, died at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after a stroke. He was 86, born on Beacon Hill, and twice won the Bancroft Prize and the Pulitzer Prize for biography.
