Esso Standard Oil Co. won the state's annual 25 million gallon gasoline contract by the lowest bid across all 100 counties for tank wagon transport and bulk plant deliveries. Esso's bid totals 20.86, 20.76, and 20.61 cents per gallon respectively, with taxes included.
Governor Umstead signed a proclamation making Agriculture Commissioner L. Y. Ballentine the authority to regulate and suppress anthrax. He may issue rules to forbid or control importation of feeds and other articles that could carry the disease into the state, including manufacturing materials.
Police say David Combs, 30, became enraged after dropping a penny in a weighing machine and could not retrieve it. He threw the scales through a glass window and was jailed for cooling-off period, ending with him in a cell as authorities secured the scene.
State forester Fred Claridge announced the fourteenth annual meeting will be held Monday in Cashiers, Jackson County. Foresters and information staff from 13 states will attend, hosted by North Carolina Conservation and Development. South Carolina assistant forester John R. Tiller leads the program.

Greenville native James Lawrence Whitfield state editor of the Raleigh News and Observer was honored with the 1953 alumni award for outstanding East Carolina College graduate in ceremonies today. He earned a 1946 bachelor’s degree from East Carolina after retiring from the army.

C G Porter of Galax Virginia filed a 200000 damage suit in Greensboro alleging two North Carolina men made him a drug addict and then charged exorbitant prices for narcotics.
Cairo accuses British forces in the Suez Canal Zone of moving beyond limits into peaceful villages. A report says garrison troops stopped a bus and four Egyptians are missing. The 1936 treaty zone stretches 104 miles along the canal and 30 miles eastward. Egypt cancelled the treaty in 1951 and Premier Naguib threatens to use force to remove the garrison if needed. Britain refuses to recognize the cancellation and offers negotiation.
Rep. John L. McMillan of South Carolina was acquitted today on a charge he violated law by contracting with the Interior Department for an oil lease on about 1 480 acres in Duchesne County Utah. The judge ruled the transaction did not constitute an improper contract. The lease was canceled by the Interior Department before trial.
International stalemate in Korean prisoner exchange continues as U N and Communist negotiators clash over repatriation terms. The U N Command proposed immediate release of 34 000 North Koreans and 14 500 Chinese to freedom if no agreement is reached within 30 days. India Britain and Canada press for U N explanations and a five nation commission plan, while the Reds demand a four month study period under a new panel.
Allied Sabre jet pilots led by three top aces shot down 11 Communist MiGs and damaged six as U N troops chopped down about 1,300 of China’s forces in Central Korea. Ground fighting saw 4,000 Chinese attack, with 1,300 killed or wounded and heavy engagements near Sniper Ridge and Triangle Hill.
President Eisenhower cruised Chesapeake Bay en route to Norfolk to confer with aides on Tuesday night’s radio address on national security federal spending and taxes. Aides Gabriel Hauge and C. D. Jackson will board the presidential yacht Williamsburg at Norfolk Naval Base and sail to Annapolis.
In Wilson North Carolina Judge Joseph W Parker sentenced two jurors H L Spivey and Johnny Luper and Deputy Sheriff Fred M Lamm to 30 days each for contempt of court after a drunken hotel brawl led to a mistrial in Mrs John L Crockers murder case.
In Manila Carlos P. Romulo accuses Elpidio Quirino of dictatorial tactics as he challenges Quirino for the Liberty party presidential nomination. Romulo resigns as ambassador and UN delegate to pursue the race while denouncing Quirino’s claim to command delegates.
The U S Air Force reports seven airmen killed in a triple collision near Frankfurt Germany 40 miles southwest of the city. An F-84 Thunderjet struck a formation of 18 C-119 Flying Boxcars causing crashes and fires. Two transports exploded in the air and wreckage spread over miles while others managed to reach Rhine Main airport.
