Raleigh reports Carolina Power and Light Co will begin operation of a second 100000 horsepower steam electric unit at its Goldsboro plant in early June. The new unit, joining the first placed last June, will boost the plant to a capacity of one billion kilowatt hours per year.
Wrightsville Beach North Carolina hosts the annual state Lions Clubs convention May 25 to 27. Officials report an expected turnout and new officers to be announced during the gathering.
Raleigh The State Utilities Commission urged a reconsideration of an order permitting Norfolk Southern Railway to abandon service between Asheboro and Tarboro. A group owning about 35 percent of NS shares argues the action reflects new developments requiring review.

Taft hoped for 10 of 14 in North Dakota but prepared to cede all 18 Oregon delegates to Eisenhower. Eisenhower backers called North Dakota Taft territory while Oregon’s eight Taft-on-ballot delegates follow a 1905 law.
Union president Emil Rieve said he would oppose any defection from the CIO Textile Workers Union of America to the rival AFL United Textile Workers.
