Byrd Opposes Panama Canal Workers Pension Bill

Senator Byrd of Virginia warned the Senate that approving pensions for about 1,900 civilian Panama Canal builders would set a precedent for similar payoffs to 288,000 civilian Army and Navy workers. The bill calls for $62.50 monthly pensions and is estimated to cost $1,443,000 in the first year, and it now moves to the House amid sharp Senate debate.
