Federal agents arrested nine people in High Point on warrants charging conspiracy to violate the internal revenue act by selling untaxed liquor. Bonds range from 590 to 1,500 dollars. Named defendants include Claude Chambers Bob McKinney John H. Brown Dorothy McKinney Weston Essie Robbins and Herbert F Weston with hearings set for June and May 27.
Dick Merrill and Jack Lambie updated President Roosevelt on their two way Atlantic flight from New York to London and back in a regular passenger plane with backer Ben Smith. They spoke of altitudes weather and instrument performance but did not discuss regular transatlantic service.
In Reidsville May 15 the strike by doffers in the Edna Mills spinning room continued after a conference between strike leaders and officials failed to yield progress toward a settlement. The walkout followed dissatisfaction with the wage and hour schedule.

In Newark federal court on May 15 the Lindbergh kidnapping saga reappears as witnesses tie the old Hauptmann case to the current plot against Paul H. Wendel. Hauptmann, executed for baby Charles A. Lindbergh Jr., figures as a recurrent name in testimony defending Ellis Parker and his son who contend Wendel was the kidnapper.
Colonel Hulda Smith reports at the VOA national council that wandering youths have returned home. She credits the National Youth Administration and CCC camps with lifting youths from a low mood, noting depression drove many to drift from town to town and into petty crime.

Hane Freund, a Hindenburg rigging officer, told investigators he was on duty near the stern when the disaster struck. His testimony, viewed as highly important by the board, delayed further examination until Monday as the death toll rose to 36 with the reported death of Otto Ernst, 78, from Hamburg.
Ten unions affiliated with the Federated Motion Picture Crafts demand a union shop and wage hour schedules. The F M P C has pushed for a closed shop and wage negotiations. A mass meeting was held to review progress toward settlement.

Davidson May 15. Dr W L Lingle says Governor Clyde R Hoey and 16 other leaders in education religion science and medicine will receive honorary degrees at Davidson College centennial commencement on June 8. The college deviates from its policy of awarding only three or four honorary degrees this year.
Rome reports Prime Minister Benito Mussolini told the Corporative guild in the Julius Caesar hall that Italy must become economically self-sufficient even if it requires working around the clock. He framed this as a guarantee of peace and the life future and power of the Italian people, mockingly critiquing democracies and noting a U.S. labor ruling.
Alfred E. Smith sails on his first trip to Europe aboard the Conte de Savoia. The former governor and presidential hopeful wears brown attire and a brown derby, declaring the voyage a regular pleasure trip and promising to have a grand time.
The North Carolina convention of the Church of God in Charlotte ends after sessions that began Wednesday. About 1,000 delegates and visitors depart for home.
Washington May 15 The administration refuses promises on the Rogge court bill as Senate foes pledge a straight out vote. Senator McCarran opposes the six justice plan seeking a two justice compromise while Wheeler demands no compromise and hopes the president will stand firm.
Fairbanks, Alaska, May 18. Three fourths of the interior town remained under water as ice jams on the Tanana and Chena rivers kept flooding. Mayor E B Collins said outside help was not yet needed though federal flood control action was urged. Temperatures dipped to 26 above zero as runoff from melting snow kept streams rising. Ice was clearing from the Chena and Tukon tributary Tanana, but the Tanana remained flooded. Many homes were evacuated and the homeless sheltered in public buildings and hotels as the city faced continued danger. The water had fallen from yesterday's crest.
Lester Brockelhurst, 23, wanted on murder charges in Illinois Arkansas and Texas, fainted and screamed as guards held him in a Poughkeepsie cell while an Illinois sheriff planned to question him about a fourth slaying. Federal authorities seek custody as the Rockford case ties to the fatal shooting of Henry Luhrsen.
