In Helsinki Finland a steamship sank after hitting a rock causing a deck cargo shift. About twenty people drowned including children as the vessel sank two minutes after the alarm.
A London report says a group of world powers including the United States and Great Britain plans to end the Paraguay Bolivia war in the Chaco with concerted action. Measures would span political financial and economic phases and may involve the League of Nations. High authority says the action would target both governments equally.
New York May 16 AP Joseph B Eastman coordinator of railroads says public ownership may be necessary someday though not urged now given finances. He warns against fear of government ownership and notes safeguards, rate cuts, labor concerns, and studies on retirements and unemployment aid.
In Asheville on May 16 Basil Banghart and Ludwig Schmidt were sentenced to 36 and 32 years for their role in the $105,000 Charlotte mail truck robbery. Judge Webb lamented the lack of death-penalty authority, calling them desperate criminals and murderers at heart.
In Belgium at Paturages Au Fief on May 16 a mine explosion and fire trapped miners. Five men were recovered from the surface in critical condition and bodies of three others were found. Rescue teams fought flames and firedamp as more men were entombed and the mine remained dangerous with little hope of saving the trapped workers.

President Roosevelt pressed for definite house marginal requirements and federal trade commission jurisdiction on the stock exchange bill. Congress paused amid disarmament, deposit insurance, and armaments talks as banking lawmakers planned to extend temporary deposit insurance and senator Morgenthau worked on language for silver. The Norris amendment to abolish the electoral college loomed in the senate as reconciliation efforts continued between house and senate market control measures.

Governor Gifford Pinchot concedes defeat in the race for the Republican nomination to challenge incumbent David A. Reed for the U S Senate. The contest also narrows to possible independent plans and reads as a pivotal Pennsylvania primary with other GOP and Democratic nominees in play. William A Schnader leads the Republican attorney general race as Edward Shannon trails. Harold G Hoffman wins a four cornered fight for New Jersey governor.
Three men Ray Williams Jimmy Kirk and Larry Kerrigan were rushed to court after Gettle’s Beverly Hills kidnapping and delivered guilty pleas receiving life sentences at San Quentin Judge Chas W Fricke ordered the terms. Gettle testified he suffered no grievous injuries making parole possible after three and a half years. District Attorney Burton Fitts had urged either guilty pleas or trial with potential death penalty but Gettle’s testimony influenced the outcome.
Mrs John J McLaughlin in Chicago wires Keenan protesting federal probes in the Bremer ransom case. She cites beatings and coercive tactics used by agents and asks President Roosevelt for justice. Her husband, John J McLaughlin, Sr, is accused of handling part of the $200000 ransom. their son, 17, was arrested with ransom money.
Assistant Attorney General Joseph B. Keenan denied to newsmen that the division of investigation used third degree methods. Mrs. John J. McLaughlin, whose husband and son are tied to the Bremer kidnapping indictments, claimed such experiences left a mark on their minds. Keenan stated the charges have no foundation and federal authorities follow the law in their duties.
Dr. E. Della Dixon Carroll a Raleigh woman physician was seriously hurt when her car crashed. Her husband, riding with her, was uninjured.
