President Truman leads push for a far reaching housing act backed by the administration while Republicans vow a strong fight. House Banking Committee approval came with all Democrats for the bill and Republicans opposing as the chamber prepares for a tense floor vote next week.
In Hazleton Pennsylvania 26 year old Martha Woodson Kalwai who called herself a child psychologist was held on murder charges after beating her 15 month old son Henry. Police say she believed the child showed jealousy of his sister and punished him with repeated blows.
Early buying interest faded as trading progressed. Most major stocks stayed near Thursday’s levels with fractional gains for Chrysler Goodyear International Harvest er United Aircraft General Electric Johns Manville Philip Morris Southern Railway Chesapeake Ohio Texas Company Pan American Airways. Higher prices were seen for Phelps Dodge Anaconda Copper Kennecott Cerro de Pasco and American Smelting while Allied Chemical slipped and several large names eased.
About 50 pupils were aboard when a bus driven by Floyd J. Queen pulled aside for a passing truck and toppled down an eight foot bank. Roughly 30 children received first aid for minor injuries, with most later sent home or taken to a hospital for examination.
Washington May 13. The United States faces debate over moving too fast from postwar punishment to peacetime reconstruction for Germany and Japan. Francis Patrick Matthews an Omaha lawyer was named secretary of the navy to succeed John S. Sullivan. The White House announced Matthews, 62, a Catholic layman and Democrat, will take office as Dan A. Kimball becomes undersecretary. President Truman also noted Dan Kimball's promotion.
On Saipan Island a five foot eel fed to 57 Filipino laborers caused 45 to fall ill with vomiting convulsions and pneumonia like fluid in the lungs. Seven were critically ill and 20 unconscious. doctors suspect nerve poisoning from shellfish toxin.
Government tests show alcohol water gasoline can raise mileage by up to 30 percent in high compression engines. Dr. Milner notes high octane fuel costs and crude use but alcohol water injected with regular or premium gasoline improves anti knock without raising fuel price, with trials across 1000 miles showing fuel savings of about six to ten percent depending on octane and compression.
Senator Hickenlooper challenged the Atomic Energy Commission over funding for communist students and fellowships. He demanded a hearing next week to review applications including Hans Freistadt, an Austrian-born communist studying relativity at the University of North Carolina. Freistadt says his loyalty to the United States remains strong.
A truckload of drums of carbon disulphide exploded in the Holland Tunnel, filling the underwater highway with fumes. About thirty people, including 20 firemen, were overcome as flames spread to three other trucks. Fire crews fought the blaze with gas masks and extinguisher chemicals while motorists evacuated along the tunnel catwalks.
Athletic Director Roy Clogston announced the N C State Maryland game on October 22 will kick off at 2 p m instead of 8 p m and be State's home coming game. The change follows Maryland's objection to a night game.
Civil Rights Congress denounces the death sentence verdict of six Trenton Black men as a vicious frameup on the eve of their appeal before New Jersey Supreme Court. It accuses police and state officials of racial persecution and extols a worldwide campaign to free the defendants.
In Statesville on May 13 a doctor said a dozen non poisonous snakebites to Miss Davie Lee Stewart would likely cause little harm. She was leading a cow near her Catawba area home when a big black snake coiled around her leg and bit her foot and ankle. The doctor, Dr. Fred Long of Catawba, noted swelling caused most of the discomfort.

Berlin May 13. Western allies rebut a Soviet charge that they are torpedoing an agreement to lift the Berlin blockade. Lawrence Wilkinson US economic adviser to the military governor called the accusation nonsense and said restrictions since March 1 1948 have been removed and more. He noted discussions over reviving the 1948 east west trade accord and that Germans on both sides could trade freely with no zonal limits.
