Soviet reports claim 4 600 German soldiers and 100 tanks were knocked out in two days. Axis forces trapped near Sevastopol eliminated after five weeks. 111 687 German and Romanian troops killed or captured. Soviet sources say 191 Axis ships sunk by planes and Black Sea fleet, including 69 transports and landing barges used for evac.

Transcontinental Flight Records Set In 1940s Crosscountry Race

A new transcontinental speed record was set by Col. Claire Peterson in a P-51 Mustang from Los Angeles to New York in six hours 31 minutes 30 seconds arriving at La Guardia eight minutes before Lieut. Col. Jack H. Carter piloting another Mustang. Peterson averaged about 378 mph for 2470 miles while Carter averaged about 370 mph for 2464 miles.
