New York May 13. Jimmy Smith, father in law of Billy Conn, earned fame as a fearless Scrapper in baseball's two fisted era. He was an infielder prized by the Pirates in 1916 to replace Honus Wagner at shortstop but hurt his ankle in the opener. In 1921 with the Phillies he hopped a Camden ferry without a ticket and tangled with dock police, ending up jailed with six stitches, then returning to play next day.
