Atty Gen John N Mitchell acknowledged informing Chief Justice Earl Warren last week about information he possessed on the Fortas controversy. Newsweek reported Mitchell urged Warren to press Fortas to resign. White House and Justice Department spokesmen denied direct presidential involvement and pledged no further comment. Fortas faced renewed criticism over a Wolfson foundation fee and impeachment moves loomed from Rep H R Gross, with Sen Walter Mondale calling for resignation.
The Pentagon plans to spread 538 B52 and B58 bombers over about 70 American airfields to reduce vulnerability to Soviet missiles. Currently SAC bases total 35, and the plan responds to Soviet sub launched missiles and the FOBS test. Officials say radar alone cannot counter these threats amid limited warning times.
GM announced the end of Chevrolet Corvair production saying it is its regular practice to review offerings. Corvair sales fell after Ralph Nader's safety campaign, with 1965 to 1966 drops and only 2,183 sold through April this year. GM will shift production to the Nova and new small car parts. buyers of 1969 Corvair receive a $150 certificate toward any Chevrolet 1969–1978 model.
