Elderly Food Programs To Remain In Business
Elderly and handicapped feeding programs rely on school meals but an attorney general opinion says schools cannot supply meals that compete with private enterprises. Mobile Meals, Williams Memorial Church, and a day care program may be forced to seek private sources after June 2 unless the law is reinterpreted. Volunteers and donations fund meals, and officials pursue a solution with Guilford County and state officials to sustain ongoing operation.

Tax relief eyed for downtown High Point Greensboro
Guilford County officials consider a 10 percent land value reduction in downtown High Point and downtown Greensboro commercial retail zones under a long shelved North Carolina law. The measure targets land valuations, not structures, in the fourth year after the 1972 revaluation as retail hardship prompts county leaders to act.

Area Pools Designers Called ill Experienced
Enterprise State Writer John Lowe reports High Point officials released an indoor feasibility study finding the current pools were designed by inexperienced designers. A future pool will be built by a professional contractor with designs drawn and cost estimates prepared for construction. The best design will be chosen based on local needs and finances. The article also notes Jaycee boat race at Oak Hollow Lake on June 26-27 with 10 15 thousand spectators expected and bus transportation from A J Simeon stadium to the lake to ease parking and protect nearby homes. Police will patrol the area and the amateur race class was removed to save time. Commissioners considered cash substitutes at City Lake using Gckels at the gate to cover purchases, with end-of-event redemptions possible. No action was taken. Agriculture Extension Club granted four days at Armstrong Park for Aug 17 20 day camp, and City Lake pool turned over to Community Swim Assn for Aug 23 meet. See AREA On 28.

Tests Show Algae Caused Fish Kill at High Rock Lake
Hassel Radford of the North Piedmont office of the state Dept of Natural Aid Economic Resources said tests support the algae theory. He explained warm weather and low rainfall led to heavy algae growth, causing oxygen depletion at night and supersaturation during the day, triggering the fish kill.
