President Truman spoke at Fordham University's centenary celebration in New York, urging education to build international understanding amid atomic age pressures. He called for eradicating ignorance and prejudice as safeguards against dictatorship and war, and cited education as a defense against the atomic era.
Asheville May 11 The AFL southern representative George Googe of Atlanta said the era of attracting industry with low wages has nearly ended. He noted new southern plants plan to pay decent wages and seek union conditions. Googe opened a two day AFL southern conference here directing the southern organization drive amid coal strike attendance cuts.
At the four power talks in Paris on reparations Italy faces a $100 million claim. Byrnes pressed payment from Italian assets abroad excess industrial equipment and merchant shipping while Molotov disputed the shipping item. Molotov withdrew opposition to Italy keeping pre fascist colonies and to an inter allied war crimes commission.
North Carolina led 1945 flue cured tobacco with 305.64 million pounds, Virginia 117.13 thousand pounds, per USDA revised estimates. Type No 13: NC 93.5 million, SC 139.52 million. Burley by state: KY 385 million, TN 108 million, VA 22.185 million. Total 1945 production 1.998 billion pounds, up 2 percent from 1944 and over 43 percent above 1934-43 average.
In Dachan Germany May 11 a U S military court convicted all 61 defendants in the Maunthausen camp torture case. The verdict follows a six week trial with sentences due Monday. Prosecutor Lt Col William Benson cited 70000 deaths in the camp during 1932 to 1945 and pressed for guilt for each defendant as part of the design to beat and kill prisoners.
The Pittsburgh Press published an ad-less eight-page edition due to a coal strike and low newsprint. Editor Edward T. Leech said a freight embargo limits supply from American mills and the Sunday edition would also be curtailed.
A car crash near Raleigh last night killed Mrs. W. H. Reinefield of Norfolk Virginia and seriously injured Jovah Vodenie of Norfolk. In the car were W. M. Reinefield, Mrs. Reinefield's husband, and W. S. Hammett, her father. other passengers were uninjured, Coroner Roy M. Banks said.
Elizabeth City May 11 P Walter Lowry of Weeksville received 1086 dollars for his steer that won first place in the Albemarle fat stock show and sale. The event drew fourteen steers from Pasquotank Camden and Currituck counties, selling Friday for a total of 5933.50 dollars at an average above 47 cents a pound.
Eyewitness accounts of a collision near Munson between two four engined navy bombers confirm some navy details but dispute others. Twenty seven airmen died and 28 were identified as missing next of kin as officials released a formal account of the crash near the Florida border.

Government inspectors can investigate and recommend improvements.
In Rome on May 11 a mass anti-Umberto demonstration gathered about 50 000 in the People’s Square and marched to the Viminale palace. Police held the area with sub machine guns as demonstrators, including leaders from the Italian parties and unions, carried red and Italian flags without the Savoy cross and chanted Down with the king.

United Mine Workers leader John L. Lewis reentered soft coal talks as miners and operators agreed to a two week truce to push a permanent settlement. The halt allows 13 million tons weekly output to resume until May 25, with 25 million tons projected in the period, while a welfare fund remains a sticking point. President Truman urged a four to five day agreement as government agencies keep emergency controls in place.
Washington presses a practical reparations policy for Japan based on production capacity. Officials propose maximum and minimum capacity figures to judge Japan's economy. The plan aims to let Japan resume industry without fearing forced seizure of facilities and to define recoverable output within the four main islands.
