Athens AP Andreas Papandreou faces high treason charges over the Aspida plot to overthrow the monarchy and throw Greece toward a neutral Socialist state. The 47-year-old son of ex-Premier George Papandreou was questioned by investigator Socrates Socratidis after confinement since the April 21 coup. Papandreou, linked to the Aspida leftist officers group, could face the death penalty if convicted.
The Senate cleared a major tax incentives bill after rebuking President Johnson by attaching a rider to curb campaign finance provisions. The rider keeps the Long plan technically alive while demanding spending guidelines for subsidy money. House negotiations are expected to accept the rider, ending seven weeks of bitter floor debate.
A U S air strike from three aircraft carriers hit a MIG airfield near Haiphong and two thermal plants in North Vietnam. One Skyhawk was shot down and the pilot missing as the raid targeted Kien An airfield and marked the third MIG base bombed in the campaign.
In the northwest corner of South Vietnam Marines battled North Vietnamese troops for five hours with 31 enemy dead as 24 Marines were killed and 19 wounded. Air Force B52s bombed Hai Phong area while carriers Enterprise Hancock and Kitty Hawk launched raids. A prisoner was captured as Marines held the hill near the Laotian border. Raids caused power failures at North Vietnam’s major port for one night.
The Pentagon reported a Soviet destroyer harassed the U S S Walker in the Sea of Japan, closing within 50 feet twice while warning shots were issued. No injuries occurred and only minor damage was sustained to the ships. Commander S W McClaran led the Walker from Santa Barbara California.
President Johnson framed his 1968 re election bid on Great Society achievements and opposing naked aggression in Vietnam at a Democratic dinner attended by about 3000. He urged perseverance to boost elderly security curb crime and expand rights while warning against Republican efforts to dismantle the program.
A chemical tank explosion during welding in Warsaw North Carolina killed Lawrence Helmick twenty nine from Verona Virginia and injured four others including Tom Hamilton in critical condition at Duplin General Hospital Kerr McGee and Richmond Engineering workers were present Edward Hardy also injured Debris shattered windows as the blast echoed through the plant
The House reversed a Tuesday vote and defeated a constitutional amendment to lower the NC voting age from 21 to 18. Final vote 63 to 44, short of the three fifths needed to advance to voters. It had passed Tuesday 74 to 37 on second reading. The measure required approval by both chambers and voters in 1968. The action ends hopes for passage this session.
Washington AP The antipoverty agency is unlikely to approve funds for WAMY Community Action Inc to start a weekly newspaper and daily radio program for four North Carolina counties. Officials cite questions of propriety and previous rejections, arguing a conventional weekly paper won t solve poverty questions.
