Masters Tourney Invites Bridge Elite
The world championship Masters event invites 36 top players chosen by the Masters Committee. Each player plays four hands with every other player as partner and eight hands against each, to determine the winner. Alvin L. Roth of New York, recently a Life Master, won this year.
Roth South Pass M. T. Double l Opening lead
Bridge column fragment notes an opening lead by Roth on the South Pass in a Double l contract. The brief reads as a partial card-room commentary with unclear suit and result details.
Roth and the Two Hearts Bid Defies Weak Hand Fate
In a last round tournament win Roth held East and chose to bid two hearts despite a weak hand. South doubled two hearts after Roth’s bid, North passed, and the result yielded only three tricks. If Roth had doubled, he would have earned a top score and eight board points, altering the outcome.
