Sheriff Bans Lions Club Pontiac Giveaway in Crackdown

Guilford Sheriff John E Walters said the May 18 horse show prize drawing violates lottery laws and reflects a countywide crackdown. He ordered the High Point Lions Club to drop the Pontiac giveaway after deputies complained about unapproved promotions. The Lions say the edict departs from precedent and note other groups have run giveaways unmolested. Walters denied knowledge of a Cadillac prize tied to a Jaycees drawing, saying an investigation began after Deputy Burrows raised criticism of local lotteries. He stressed shared enforcement with municipalities and cautioned that only cases with money involved count as violations.
