Ford says talks or arbitration on speed up will be pursued. plants at River Rouge Mercury and Flint face layoffs while others announce penalties. Local and supplier plants report job losses and potential plant closings as negotiations continue.
Washington May 7 At least 50,000 landlords have begun filing for rent increases under the fair net operating income formula. The expeditor's office said many have taken official blanks, with 400,000 more forms to be printed. Petitions are reviewed individually. retroactivity to filing date encourages early submission. The formula divides small and large landlords, setting lifting thresholds and percentages. A detailed questions and answers list clarifies net operating income calculations, including allowable expenses and depreciation.
PALL MALL Tenn May 7 Set Alvin C York of World War I fame is confined to his home after a second stroke in a year and a recurrence of colitis. His son Woodrow said the ex soldier’s condition was serious and pleas for hospital care were rejected. York 62 year old holder of the congressional medal of honor has been in bad health for about a year. His physician Dr Guy Tinkley said York is a pretty sick man.
CHAPEL HILL May The day of the hysterical imaginary picture of the possibility of making a desert of our planet with DDT has passed Dr H K Townes of N C State College told members of the North Carolina Academy of Science at the final session of the 46th annual meeting of the society at the University of North Carolina here We have found that even with DDT it takes work skill and money to kill many insects and that even when we are successful we get only certain species and these are soon back again DDT does little harm to the birds and the wild flowers are still pollinated where DDT has been spread so the general nature lover is not much concerned about DDT any longer.

Governors past and present appointed directors with political influence rising in recent years, including outside pressure on the advertising division as state contracts shifted among agencies and hearings expanded to include all claimants. Hight Point College trustees selected Dr Dennis H Cooke head of the institution to succeed retiring President Dr G I Humphreys. Cooke will take the post after finalizing commitments with the Woman's College summer school and Duke University. Humphreys plans retirement this summer, with Cooke to assume duties later.
Ponder the Calumet Farm colt, ridden by Steve Brooks, surged from last to first in the 75th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs before a crowd over 90,000. Olympia led early but faded to sixth. Capot finished second with Palestinian third as a dramatic upset capped by a $34 payout to backers.
Chinese communists say they captured a town 33 miles north of Tsingtao and the last two nationalist holdout cities on the Peiping-Hankow railway, claiming all north China is liberated. Shanghai reports Red pressure on outer Shanghai defenses. Nationalists deny loss of Tsingtao.
Glen R. Gale of Mount Grangan South Carolina, a 19 year old pre medical student at Duke University, announced the discovery of a fungus killer at a North Carolina Academy of Science meeting in Chapel Hill. The organism killed or stopped 28 tested fungi and showed potential against plant diseases and human skin infections. Dr John R Warren Duke botanist notes ongoing work to isolate the killer for possible unlimited medical and agricultural applications. Gale, who hoped to become a country doctor, made the finding during routine soil bacteria research.
E Sigurd Johnson of Salem Virginia was named the first recipient of the James T Ryan professorship in furniture manufacturing at North Carolina State College. Johnson will head a new four year curriculum in furniture manufacturing and management leading to a bachelor of science degree. The professorship was endowed by the Furniture Foundation Inc in honor of Ryan who is executive director of the Southern Furniture Manufacturers Association.
East German delegates urged a unity meeting with western leaders on the eve of a West German constitution. The ADN reported a telegram seeking talks on German unity and a peace treaty with occupation troop withdrawal. The appeal follows past rejections by West Germany over Soviet influence in a unified state.
Employment in North Carolina factories dropped 19 percent in April, a loss of about 6,500 jobs. The State Labor Department cited 12 industries with layoffs led by textiles and lumber, while small gains occurred in six sectors such as food products and tobacco. Electrical machinery kept steady from March.
