Pittsburgh May 8 Fourteen hundred striking coal miners returned to work near California Pennsylvania today while 500 miners at a second Pennsylvania mine quit, leaving over 2,600 idle across three states as President Roosevelt reiterates that government employed miners cannot strike.
United Nations hailed Allied success in Tunisia with swift Axis defeat in North Africa. Moscow reported large crowds, radio and Tass coverage praising the victory as a potential start for a second European front. In the U.S. coal sector, miners pressed for contract terms as walkouts spread in Pennsylvania and Indiana amid government wage controls.
Allied report from Australia on May 8 says daylight raids by Kenney’s bombers hit Japanese bases in Dutch New Guinea almost daily since May 1. The latest strike by Australian-piloted Catalinas hit Babo, 700 miles north of Darwin, destroying airfields and igniting fires visible 70 miles away. Liberators also attacked Babo in clear weather, starting fires and destroying grounded planes inside MacCluer Gulf.

Allied forces have secured the North African shore defeating Axis power in the Mediterranean theater. Tunisia remains to be mopped up as German and Italian holdouts retreat to mountain fortifications. Evacuation hopes center on Cape Bon while Allied momentum continues.
Washington May 8 The Senate Finance Committee backed the Ruml plan 13 to 6 to fold it into a new current collection tax bill the plan would tax pay as you go for most incomes and wipe out the lower bracket for those under 5000 while capping or deferring taxes for higher earners with a 20 percent wage withholding starting July 1 and quarterly payments for others including farmers, amid looming floor opposition.
A federal plan aims to cut retail prices on beef veal pork lamb mutton coffee and butter by ten percent starting June 1. The program funded by the Reconstruction Finance Corporation would use flat payments to producers for price reductions and may be compulsory, with estimated annual costs near two billion dollars and multiple food items included beyond meat coffee and butter.
Allied authorities revealed that Maj Gen Omar N Bradley led the victorious U S Second Corps push into Bizerte, taking over from Lieut George S Patton Jr as American forces shifted north on April 17. General Eisenhower praised the Tunis and Bizerte falls while pledging to keep fighting enemies on African soil.

American tanks rolled into Bizerte as cheering French crowds showered them with flowers in a victory salute. Axis engineers blew docks and fled across the canal to the marshes while British forces entered Tunis moments earlier.
Patrolman RB. T. Collins was shot three times after stopping an unidentified white man for speeding near the Gastonia fairgrounds. The gunman wrestled for the officer’s weapon and fled, later vanished toward South Carolina after magistrates chased him through Kings Mountain. The stolen car tied to Landis was involved. Collins was treated at a Gastonia hospital with nonserious injuries.

American troops have moved to Amchitka in the western Aleutians, enabling more air strikes on Kiska and Attu. A newly established Amchitka base gives Navy planes a constant threat to Japanese positions, with potential for heavy fighting to recapture the islands.
In Gibraltar Bay at 6 a.m. three merchant ships were beached by British naval tugs after violent explosions rocked the harbor. An Axis submarine attack was reported but not confirmed immediately.
