Dow, blue chips lead rebound after early market selloff
New York stocks firmed after an initial dip as glamour and blue-chip shares rose. The Dow Jones 30 edged up to 836.36 at noon, the NYSE composite gained 0.24 to 47.15, and the AMEX market index rose 0.40 to 36.14 as analysts cite continued hope for economic recovery and cash-backed buying.

German Ships First Through Suez After Eight Years
Two West German freighters Muensterland and Norwind became the first commercial ships to pass the Suez Canal in eight years. They left Great Bitter Lake, reached Port Said in seven and a half hours, then aimed for Hamburg. Egyptian workers welcomed the opening as Kissinger’s peace efforts faltered.

N C Presidential Primary Proposal Moves Through Committee
A committee backed a May presidential primary citing timing concerns with the general election in November. A separate bill would create rules for the presidential preference primary requiring the Elections Commission to notify candidates of ballot placement and allow removal only if a candidate withdraws. Senator Strickland argued more names staying on the ballot reflects serious candidacy.
