High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - May 7, 1974, High Point, North Carolina 25-cent bus ride draws customers by Dan Berger associated press writer los Angeles apr after 25 years of depending heavily on the car Many residents of this freeway filled City Are discovering a new Way to get around the bus. There has been a rapid transit bus system in los Angeles for years but most persons have found their cars More convenient. Now comes the 25-cent ride. And for Many motorists plagued by High gasoline prices and spiralling parking fees the bus and its Quarter ride have become too Good to pass up. On april i. County supervisors authorized $9.6 million from Federal Revenue sharing funds to allow riders to go anywhere in an area 110 Miles wide and 55 Miles Long for just 25 cents. A the 25-cent ride has changed things and brought a lot of people around a says Jack Gilstrap general manager of the Southern California rapid transit District. For one thing the number of riders jumped 15 per cent. District officials Hope the program will lure up to 25 per cent More passengers by june 30, when the program ends. If supervisors agree on the scope of its Success the program will be continued. To carry the new riders the District bought new buses refurbished 150 old ones and hired 130 Drivers to bring the total to 3.000. Buses now carry about 670.000 persons a Day about 75,000 More than before the 25-cent ride began. To increase bus business sunday rides were Cut to to cents. Trimbach told the jury one of his meetings on feb. 28 near an Indian barricade of burned out vehicles was with Means. Beale said earlier monday that he has indications that Leroy Mason 35, and mrs. Elaine Renee Cobbs 21, were in his City on sept. 8, 1973, the Date Shay. 54, and his wife Shirley 41, were abducted. Their bodies were found the next Day in a gravel pit in Charles City county a. Beale declined to say what the indications were that led him to believe that the pair was in North Carolina last fall. Mason who is being held in the Henrico county jail in lieu of $200,000 Bond on two state murder charges and a Federal kidnapping charge says he is innocent of the crime he is charged with. Mrs. Cobbs was removed from the Richmond City jail Early saturday night to an undisclosed jail for what authorities said was for her own Protection. Beale said he will consult tuesday with his prosecutor in North Carolina to determine what charges if any his state will file against the couple. He indicated however that kidnapping charges probably would be filed sometime this week. Mason and mrs. Cobbs were arrested Early Friday morning by state and Federal investigators. The Federal kidnapping charge was placed late Friday afternoon after Fri agents searching the Mason Home recovered two weapons. The weapons allegedly were stolen from the Shay Home at the time of their abduction. Police have not said How they were Able to connect Mason and mrs. Cobbs to the Shay abduction murders.
