Telstar 2 Blasts Into Orbit From Cape Canaveral

Telstar 2 rode a Delta rocket into orbit from Cape Canaveral at 6 38 am. Mission aims include a transatlantic closed circuit TV test between the United States and Europe and evaluating the satellite as a successor to Telstar 1. NASA reports good signals and an orbit near the planned path.

U N Security Council to Hold Urgent Haiti Session

The United Nations Security Council called an urgent session for Wednesday at 3 p.m. on Haiti’s complaint of threats from the Dominican Republic. Ambassa dor Roger Seydoux of France presides with ten other members. The United States favors deferring to the OAS and may propose delaying action pending further talks. Haitian Foreign Minister Rene Chalmers warned of a critical situation in the Caribbean.

Two Plead Guilty To Spy Charges

British businessman Greville Wynne and Soviet official Oleg Penkovsky pleaded guilty in a packed Moscow courtroom to spying for U S and British intelligence. Wynne acknowledged active espionage with reservations. Penkovsky confessed with no reservations. The trial drew international attention as prosecutors alleged a wide range of sensitive data sharing.

Three Die in Sub Fire at Groton Shipyard

A flash fire in the aft trim tank of the submarine Flasher under construction at Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut, killed three workers and injured two, with one in critical condition. Names of the dead were not released pending next of kin notification. The two injured were Stanley Jasczyk and John D. Galluscio, both transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London.

Absentee ballot bill passes NC House returns to Senate for changes

North Carolina House gave an overwhelming voice vote to a tightened absentee voting bill on third reading. The measure, a Senate substitute, returns to the Senate for approval of House Committee on Elections and Election Laws changes. Americans Reported Defect in East Germany

East Germany says a U S Army captain and a sergeant requested asylum after crossing the border. Capt. Alfred Svenson of Scranton Pennsylvania and Sgt. Benjamin Cain of Frederica Delaware are named by ADN as the pair, with the sergeant missing from his unit. U S Army HQ in Heidelberg is investigating.

Dependents Ordered Out Of Haiti

The State Department orders families of U S officials in Haiti to depart and urges private Americans to leave. About 220 dependents will be evacuated by Pan American World Airways to Port au Prince, plus roughly 1 300 U S civilians seeking to exit. About 180 American officials remain. Evacuation cited deteriorating conditions and safety concerns, not rising hostilities with the Dominican Republic. A House hearing on Haiti is planned with executive branch officials.
