Artillery Strengthened in Viet Nam With Added Battalions
Defense officials said four more artillery battalions were sent to Viet Nam since January, bringing total ground firepower to meet present needs. The Pentagon noted 105mm howitzers fired in cross border actions near Cambodia, with 155mm and 175mm weapons in service, and discussed potential expansion to 17,000 artillery personnel and about 200 more cannons if required. Ground artillery offers all weather capability when air power is hindered by clouds or darkness.
