Princess Margaret married Antony Armstrong Jones in a grand Westminster Abbey ceremony watched by millions. The couple then sailed on Britannia for a Caribbean honeymoon as crowds cheered in London.
A string of tornadoes across eastern Oklahoma left 25 dead and about 200 injured. Wilburton saw 11 fatalities including churchgoers at Calvary Baptist, while Sapulpa suffered heavy damage with two reported deaths. Rescue efforts were hampered by darkness and power outages.
A tornado struck Menifee near Morrilton in the early hours, destroying a dozen homes two churches and the post office. One woman Ora Oliver aged 70 died and about 20 people were injured with most hospitalized in Morrilton. Sheriff Marlin Hawkins led rescue efforts.

The Senate sent a 251 million dollar bill to President Eisenhower to aid chronically distressed regions with loans and grants to create jobs. Democrats may use a possible veto as a campaign issue. Dirksen signals veto support. Kennedy and Humphrey voted for the bill in West Virginia.
Registration closes today in Cumberland Forsyth Guilford Mecklenburg Wake and Wilson under a year round rule. Other 94 counties follow a three week window ending May 14 to add names before the May 28 primary.
The House Appropriations Committee approved a $3.964 billion Agriculture Department money bill, $170 million below Eisenhower's request. Harvey Firestone II, crippled heir to the Firestone tire fortune, plunged to his death from a 20th floor Havana Hilton balcony. Authorities ruled the death a self-inflicted act. The 30-year-old St. Petersburg resident, aided by an attendant and cousin, disappeared after 7 p.m. and was found on the parapet. Firestone, magna cum laude University of Miami graduate and top Stetson Law student, had cerebral palsy and used a wheelchair.
