Former Mayor Ben Cone and Councilman Jack Lindley lead the contest, while High Point Mayor Amos R. Kearns has been floated as a compromise. Governor Umstead discussed a possible deal with Kearns and local supporters, but no agreement emerged. If no consensus is reached, Curley Powell of Reidsville is seen as the likely appointee.
