A.P. analyst argues the Berlin airlift forced the end of the Russian blockade and proved a major morale and technical boon for the West. Johnson and Attlee lauded it as historic while noting its heavy costs and future implications for NATO and allied cooperation.
Mrs Maude Jimison was announced as the new head of the state women’s prison in Raleigh amid a prisoner protest. Director J Brice Moore and Governor Scott met with inmates who demanded hearings on grievances and parole policy. The move follows earlier talks and reflects ongoing changes in the prison system.
RALEIGH May 6 The Motor Vehicle Department announced that motorists whose names begin with H I and K must be re examined by June 30 to renew or risk losing driving privileges. Between May 15 and June more than 30 000 tasks and bus drivers must be examined for drivers licenses.
Shanghai reports indicate strong Communist attacks rolling up from the southwest and northwest while by-passing the city earlier. Several thousand Reds strike near Kashing and Taichang, with engagements at Chengchih and northern Fukien border areas as Nationalist defenses hold or retreat.
Four miners were found dead 600 feet below the surface at Gilberton No.5 colliery after a shaft fire. Names William Kelly Joseph Wowak Raymond Eye and William O'Brien, all from nearby towns, were recovered as rescuers struggled with smoke and compressed air lines. A vigil at the pithead ended as surface crowds dispersed.
New York May 6 The stock market opened lower with losses around a point or less on average. Electric Power and Light led gains after a stockholder group appeal to stay a reorganization was denied while Richfield Oil weakened briefly. Several majors including U S Steel Republic Steel Rubber Woolworth Caterpillar Tractor Southern California Edison American Smelting Air Reduction DuPont Philip Morris Santa Fe Standard Oil NJ and Loews fell. General Motors International Harvester Boeing and Public Service Electric Gas Eastman Kodak and Northern Pacific remained steadier.
Former Supreme Court Justice Owen J. Roberts told the Senate Foreign Relations committee that delaying ratification of the North Atlantic Defense Pact would invite Soviet aggression and hurt allied prestige. James W. Gerard, former ambassador to Germany, warned that failure to ratify could trigger war within a year and end democracy, with Russian communism dominating the world.
Dr Edward Hubble at Palomar Observatory says the 200 inch telescope lens will be polished again this month to remove about 20 millionths of an inch from an edge spot. The six month process aims for a 10 percent gain in performance enabling photographs of stars up to 100 million light years farther than earlier reach. The telescope was built to see one billion light years into space, twice the range of Mount Wilson's 100 inch telescope.
The Senate sent a 300 million dollar federal education aid bill to the House for the second year. It would provide 300 million annually for teacher salaries and school operating costs aimed at equalizing opportunities, with strongest aid to poor states.
The Veterans Administration ordered 8,000 staffers discharged in the new fiscal year plan. 42 offices will close across 23 states while hospitals and medical services remain unaffected. Carl R. Gray Jr. said 30 days notice will be provided to those affected and essential veteran services will be maintained.
Philip Murray's United Steelworkers push for a new wage raise and social benefits as part of a fourth round. CIO leaders expect similar demands from auto and electrical unions, with pensions and health plans under consideration for 1,116,000 members.

Rep. Vito Marcantonio of the American Labor Party blocked passage of a Taft Hartley influenced labor bill by insisting on an engrossed copy. The delay pushed the vote to the next day, enabling opponents to regroup. The House then voted 212 to 209 to shelve the bill.
A 13 year old girl, Diane Allen of Oak Law, Illinois, confessed to deputy sheriffs that she drowned seven year old Charles Johnson last Saturday. She claimed she tied a scarf around his mouth and held him under water until he stopped moving, saying she feared he would tell his mother and get her in trouble. Charles had joined friends to pick wildflowers before disappearing.
Washington May 6 Russia may propose withdrawing all occupation troops from Germany at the Big Four Ministers conference in Paris opening May 23. The United States Britain and France have yet to decide how to respond if raised. State Department experts and western plans include unity of German regions and unification of the Soviet and western zones, with freedom and democratic institutions for the whole country. President Truman hailed renewed negotiations on the Berlin blockade agreement. There are some obstacles remaining.
A heat wave bakes the eastern half of the United States while Wyoming and Colorado see wintry conditions. Snow drifts blocked 60 miles of U S Highway 30 near Rock Springs and Wamsutter, prompting plow crews. Cheyenne and Colorado Springs report mixed rain and snow with near freezing temps as a cooling front advances.
Paris dispatch reports Maurice Maeterlinck famed Belgian author of The Blue Bird died in Nice at 86. He wrote Pelleas et Melisande which Debussy adapted as an opera and other noted works The Life of the Ant and The Life of the Bee.
