Light Vote Threatens Democrats In Tuesday City Election
Democratic leaders warned workers that a Democratic victory in the city election is not assured and stressed three days of work to mobilize voters. They noted the Republican organization could add about 3 000 votes in a light turnout, with only about 6 000 votes cast in the prior municipal contest. Chairman Byron Haworth said concern over overconfidence exists, but pledged strong organization to seek a sizable Tuesday majority. Republican Chairman L F Ferree claimed plans are set to maximize party strength and that candidates offer a balanced ticket for High Point. The last election produced a narrow mayoral and council win for Republicans. The roster lists Democratic mayoral candidate Earl N Phillips and eight council seats across wards.
