Graf Zeppelin to Begin Arctic North Pole Flight Plan

Graf Zeppelin, under Dr Hugo Eckener, will start for the North Pole in mid July to meet Sir Hubert Wilkins in a submarine. The voyage, backed by William Randolph Hearst, aims to test airship use for polar landings and resupply.

Trial Postponed in Carr Postmaster Murder Case

The second of Ernest Herring, African American, charged with murdering Carr postmaster F. F. Newton, had his trial delayed to tomorrow after a previous death sentence was overturned by the same court granting a new trial.

Grand jury to probe deadly gun battle in Harlan county

A special grand jury convened in Harlan Kentucky to investigate a recent gun battle that left four dead and two wounded amid labor turmoil. Sheriff Blair requested state troops from Governor Sampson as 40 union sympathizers fired on deputies and mine guards in Evarts.

Bells rang in Windsor as George V marked the 21st anniversary of his accession to the throne. The ailing king rested at Windsor Castle with Queen Mary, whose long reign began after Edward VII’s death on May 6, 1910.

Frank Crinkley of Durham NC navy intercollegiate heavyweight boxing champion football lineman and varsity crew member has been put to bed following his second inoculation prior to graduation in June. Meekins Refuses To Vacate Impounding Order In NC Ballots

U S District Judge J M Meekins refused to vacate an order directing the marshal to impound ballots and ballot boxes in the Bailey Pritchard senatorial contest. Hearings are set in Raleigh and Charlotte with further action possible after notices to all parties.

Plan To Move Revenue Office To Greensboro

Plans for moving the internal revenue office in North Carolina from Raleigh to Greensboro were announced by the internal revenue bureau. The exact timing depends on the new federal building project in Greensboro, with construction not yet started and a pencil plan shown to assess feasibility. Raleigh has long housed one of the two districts with 50 to 60 employees.

North Carolina Cities Vote in Wide Municipal Elections

Across North Carolina citizens in more than a score of cities and towns went to the polls. Charlotte elected four new independent council members while one old member was re elected. Greensboro re elected three of the old council and added three newcomers. Winston Salem chose a Democratic mayor and eight Democrats to the board of aldermen. Henderson re elected mayor Vine B. Watkins with 655 to 398 and all current council members were returned without opposition. Other cities including Durham Salisbury Concord Fayetteville Highland Brookford Sanford Vanceboro New Bern Mount Olive Wadesboro Lexington North Wilkesboro and Selma also named new governing bodies.

Woman found dead near Chadbourn in traffic incident

The body of Grace McCumbee 22 of Chadbourn was found on highway 202 about one mile north of Chadbourn. She appeared to have been struck and killed by an automobile. A motorist reported the body to officers who have no clue to the driver.

Representative McCabe dies from hotel room wound

W U McCabe representative of Baxter county in the Arkansas legislature died in a Little Rock hospital from a gunshot wound believed to have been fired through a hotel room door. H G Lonsdale of Atlanta faces murder charges after being linked to the incident. a pistol found in his room showed evidence of recent firing.

Spectator Shot at Tulsa Circus Stage Coach Scene

J T Dickey the motor accessories dealer was shot and wounded while watching a stage coach robbery reenactment in a Tulsa circus. Surgeons said his condition was critical after a bullet hit near the heart as masked riders fired into the arena. Col Zack Miller disputed explanations while police suspected a real cartridge was used.

Plane lands safely after crash in Wisconsin field

Dan Welker a middle aged cripple was found dead at his sister's Greensboro North Carolina home from a gunshot wound. Coroner W. W. Harvey ruled it a death by own action in a plain self inflicted case.

Indictment Won’t Halt Trial In North Carolina Attack

E. S. Williamson a 45 year old African American man was indicted by the Columbus county grand jury for criminally attacking a farmer’s wife in West Prong area twelve months ago. He is held in an undisclosed jail and trial is scheduled for June 22 in Whiteville after capture in Sampson county.

Five Victims Found Dead In Mississippi Farm Home

Five people were slain at a Mississippi farmhouse near Blue Mountain. Authorities believe A W Carter, his wife Nora, two daughters Martha and Mary, and roomer Miss Anne Jeffries were murdered with a hammer. Carter died from gunshot wounds. Neighbors found the bodies after a missing morning routine, with signs of a nighttime disturbance and cries heard earlier.

Employment Discussed At Commerce Meeting

Gerard Swope of General Electric told the international chamber of commerce that regularization of employment reduces unemployment insurance needs and relief costs. Asheville North Carolina May 6 G N Malone former bond attorney for Asheville and Buncombe county was denied a continuance of his trial on a conspiracy charge to use public funds to aid the Central Bank and Trust Company Judge Barnhill refused to delay the case noting insufficient indication of term length and Malone's lack of prep time.

Berlin reports street clashes between political groups in Duisburg and Kiel last night injuring nine people, one possibly fatally. The incidents occurred across two Prussian cities as tensions flared.

May adjourn Friday as lawmakers push safeguards on ballot impounding

In Raleigh on May 6 AP reports both houses voted to adjourn while setting up safeguards and methods for impounding ballot boxes. Governor Gardner urged a revenue bill but 47 house conferees caucused with MacLean of Beaufort author of the MacLean school law. Hamilton moved to instruct conferees to press the Senate for a revenue act enforcing the MacLean law in full.

Reno Reflects Liberal Leader Wins Reelection in Reno

Mayor E. E. Roberts and most city officials were reelected to four year terms in a Reno municipal vote. Roberts, father in law of baseball star Walter Johnson, defeated Howard S. Doyle and Milburn R. Gregory while championing divorce and gambling laws and opposing prohibition. He urged public barrels of corn whiskey to curb bootleggers.

Military Forces Hold Tetuan After Moorish Riot

Madrid May 6 The city Tetuan capital of Spanish Morocco is under control of military forces after riots that left two dead and about twenty wounded. Moors protested working conditions and wages in clashes with Spanish soldiers as many more move into the city from surrounding districts amid dissension.

Nitroglycerin Set Off At Well Fails To Extinguish Fire

Gladewater Texas May 6 seven quarts of nitroglycerin exploded at the Sinclair No 1 coale oil well but failed to stop the blaze. The blast dislodged the Kelly joint at the casing head. Kinley brothers Oklahoma firefighters expect later shots to extinguish the fire. Sinclair Oil officials said a second charge would be fired late today. A nearby pine wood fire was put out before the nitroglycerin exploded.
